price Ubiquiti devices are so good it’s even less than the some of the home routers.

I went with EdgeRouter Lite
and went with 1 access point for now which is Unifi-AP-AC-LR with Broadbandbuyer I got 3 year free cloud controller access for this access point.

Router is very fast and can do lot of things we can only do with more expensive router like VLANs IPSec and PPTP tunnels BGP monitoring and lots more same with access points easy to install and setup.

overall you want be disappointed

  2. I recently sold my EdgeRouter Lite, although I really like EdgeOS/Vyatta/VyOS – never used the WebGUI much, always stuck to editing the config file via SSH.

    Decided I wanted to move away from proprietary solutions so moved over to a mini ITX box/SSD/Pico power supply/Celeron N3150 – zero moving parts so silent. The N3150 has AES-NI so I expect it should be able to deal with VPNs better than the EdgeRouter. It currently runs pfSense.

  4. yea I love pfsence I find it easier to use than edge lite, I couldn’t find a good hardware to run them, can you send me the link to the hardware you running pfsence ?

  5. My hardware is –

    – Asus N3150I-C motherboard(the Celeron N3150 has AES-NI crypto acceleration – helps IPsec VPN, but not OpenVPN apparently)
    – Dell Intel dual port gigabit PCI-E network card X3959(bought second hand off eBay for £18) – the motherboard only has one NIC
    – Pico PSU + power adapter
    – 50GB 2.5″ SSD
    – 4GB RAM
    – Apex MI 008 case – may be difficult to find in the UK, mine cost £30 delivered and came from Amazon France marketplace.

    Obviously with pfSense you’re basically building a PC to suit your personal needs, in my case I wanted silence – so no moving parts, I also had spare DDR3 RAM so needed DDR3 slots on the motherboard. There may be better motherboards out there today …

    pfSense fans like Intel based NICs for performance reasons, also you need to check your network card is supported by pfSense – not every one is.
